Desk-Bound? 5 Posture Resets You Can Do Between Meetings

You don't need a gym break to undo a day of sitting. Five quick resets that take under a minute and keep your spine happy.

Sitting is not the enemy, staying frozen in one position for hours is. The fix is not a complete overhaul of your workday, it is small, frequent movement that reminds your spine and muscles how they are supposed to feel. Here are five resets you can do without leaving your desk.

1. The chin tuck

Gently draw your head straight back, as if making a double chin, and hold for five seconds. This counteracts the forward head posture that builds up while you stare at a screen and re-engages the deep muscles that support your neck.

2. Seated shoulder rolls

Roll your shoulders up, back, and down ten times. It sounds almost too simple, but it releases the upper-trapezius tension that turns into headaches and that knot between your shoulder blades.

3. The open-book stretch

Sit tall, clasp your hands behind your head, and gently open your elbows wide while lifting your chest. This reverses the rounded-forward position your upper back falls into and restores a bit of extension to your thoracic spine.

4. Stand and hinge

Every hour, stand up, place your hands on your lower back, and gently lean backward a few degrees. Discs love the change in pressure, and your low back gets a break from the constant flexion of sitting.

5. Reset your setup, then your spine

Raise your monitor to eye level and keep your feet flat on the floor so good posture is the path of least resistance. Movement and ergonomics keep the strain down, but if you already end every day stiff and achy, an adjustment can restore the motion that sitting has taken away. We are happy to take a look.
